With the Tritons facing Aliso Niguel for the second time this season, the Tritons came out flat with turnovers, foul trouble, and poor execution. Tritons were down by 12 in the middle of the 2nd quarter and that continued until the middle of the third when the Tritons came alive, creating turnovers, and making shots. Tritons took the lead with 5 minutes left in the 4th led by Ben Hegewald with 21 points and Kyle Sroka 12 points. Key contributions from post players Trey Torticill, Will King, and Brennen Garff opened up the game and put the game out of reach with a 5 point margin winning 59-54.
The San Clemente Tritons JV entered the arena Wednesday night to face off against the El Toro Chargers looking to extend their run through the Aliso Niguel JV Classic tournament. The Chargers came hard early, knocking San Clemente back on their heels and taking an early lead. But the Tritons didn't panic. Trailing by two at the end of the first quarter the Tritons, with Berk Harris adding 5 more of his 9 first half points, out scored El Toro 16-1 to take a 29-16 lead at the half. San Clemente continued their run in the third quarter. Nate Gerkin basically ran the same play over and over again while Andrew Herbert mixed in a couple of daggars from beyond the arc. The Tritons closed it out, taking down the Chargers with a 55-41 final. The high scorer for the game was Andrew Herbert (16). Also in double digits were Nate Gerkin (11) and Berk Harris (11). Other scoring contributions were from Gibbons (6), Regalado (4), Cuevas (4), Tomlinson (2) and Herrord (1).
The Triton varsity team easily won its home opener 75-39 over visiting Woodbridge. Solid rebounding and defense, along with an even distribution of scoring, paved the way to another strong victory. Four Tritons scored in double figures, including Max Marshall and Jacob Nemeth with 11, and Chris Kane and Anthony Smetona with 10. Marshall, Kane and Josh Walker (6 points) also dominated the boards. Key play and scoring were also had by Medrano and Powell (6 points each); Ihani and Baggs (4 points); Ames, Young and Slaton (2 points) and Martino (1 point).
The San Clemente Tritons JV faced off against the J Serra Lions in a re-match Monday night. The Lions must have taken notes from the first match-up. They managed to contain San Clemente's offense and take advantage of their size in the paint and some open looks beyond the arc. With the score tied at 15 after the first quarter, the Lions lead by 4 at the half, keeping San Clemente to only 7 points in the second. The coaches Montecinos flipped some switches and turned a few dials at half time because the Tritons unleashed a torrent of threes from beyond the arc starting with three from Nate Gerkin and another from Andrew Herbert for good measure outscoring J Serra 19-9 in the third quarter. Now leading 41-35 the storm beyond the arc continued but this time it was Andrew Herbert crushing any hopes the Lions had of a comeback with four threes and 16 points in the fourth quarter. To add insult to injury San Clemente only allowed 2 points from J Serra in the fourth in a statement win with a 65-37 final. Andrew Herbert lead all scorers with 27 followed with 20 from Nate Gerkin and 12 from Ethan Sherrell. Other scoring came from Monshietehadi (2), Carlin (2) and Tomlinson (2).
SCHS Sophmores defeat Servite 57-39
After a close first half filled with turnovers, missed free throws and layups, caused the Tritons to be down 14-12 in at the end of the first quarter. A last second three pointer by Cade Dewey to close out the first half with a five point lead 25-20. Tritons pressured Servite to take a double digit lead quickly in the third. Outstanding play by Kyle Sroka with 18 points and Ben Hegewald with 15 points, put the game out of reach. Everyone was able to play and many players made contributions. Alex Anawalt 8pts Brennen Garff 5 pts Trey Torticill 4 points The San Clemente Tritons JV hosted the Woodbridge Warriors on Friday night in a non-league meeting. With a combined 3 points between the two teams after almost 4 minutes of play it looked like it was going to be a long night. After Coach Mont deemed the starting unit ineffective he made a wholesale substitution with five new players. The subs, hungry for recognition, helped power the Tritons to a 12-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Tritons return to something closer to form while still keeping the Warriors to single digits. San Clemente lead at half time 26-15. With an uncharacteristically even distribution of scoring the Tritons eventually finished off the Warriors with a 51-30 final.
The San Clemente varsity team lost 51-54 to Newport Harbor in the Third Place Game of the Godinez Tournament. After trailing by 10 early in the game, the Tritons came alive and dominated the second and third quarters. However, the fourth quarter was a struggle, and down by 1 with less than 15 seconds left, a layup and two tip-backs by San Clemente players wouldn’t fall. After an intentional foul, and with only .6 seconds left, a final full-court pass and shot attempt failed, and the Tritons lost a winnable game to a quality opponent. Scoring for the Tritons were Jacob Nemeth with 18, Max Marshall 12, Anthony Smetona 9, Chris Kane 6, Jay Baggs 3, Nick Martino 2 and Mario Medrano 1.
SC faced off against Aliso Niguel in the Semi Finals of the Godinez Tournament Friday night. Every time these two teams meet up it is always a great event and this one lived up to the rivalry. Jacob Nemeth had a season high 29 points in what was a standout performance for the SC crowd. Nemeth went 5 for 5 on three pointers and 8 out of 9 on free throws, but the Tritons let this slip past them. SC was up 25-23 at halftime and out-played Aliso through much of the game, but some tough calls and 12 turnovers throughout the game kept SC from taking control, and Aliso was able to squeak past SC 58-53. Josh Walker with 7 pts and 5 rebounds, paired up with Chris Kane with 7 pts and 4 rebounds lead the rest of the team.
The Trition Freshman A team lose a tough semi final game to Trabuco Hills 62-56 but bounce back in the consolation game to finish third in the Dana Hills Freshmen Tournament. In the 3rd place game San Clemente beat host Dana Hills 68-54.
The freshman are 3-1 so far this season.

The sophomores roll into the finals of the Capo Valley tournament with a 48-43 victory against Trabuco Hills. 7 first half three propel the sophs to a 26-21 halftime lead as they hit 11 3's for the game.
